Letters: Support local, even in the air

I am writing in response to a letter in the Sept. 30 publication re: “Action needed on Harbour Air cuts.” The writer states that Sunshine Coast Air “does not have the infrastructure of Harbour Air and their offerings are already limited.” This is not accurate and it’s irresponsible to suggest so.

Sunshine Coast Air has been in operation for decades, is 100 per cent locally owned and operated and offers daily flights to YVR and Vancouver Island. The writer suggests “providing incentives” to a non-local company who happens to be one of the largest, most profitable SeaPlane companies in the world. I find this outrageous –– if incentives were to be provided, wouldn’t we want to incentivize a local company to expand their services?

Harbour Air doesn’t need incentives, they have cut services simply because it’s not profitable for them to operate in Sechelt.  Sunshine Coast Air has remained in service for all of us on the Coast, providing professional, reliable service despite which routes are profitable, or not. We all need to support local on all levels, and in this instance specifically it is critical or we may have no alternative to BC Ferries.
