Editor:
I encourage everyone to write to the SCRD ([email protected]) about the 11 per cent increase in our water utility bill for 2024 that was passed at the Dec. 14 board meeting.
SCRD Regional water cost history:
2022: $526.92
2023: $651.49 (23.6% increase)
2024: $723.15 (11% increase)
With property taxes and utilities going up at such high rates, how does the SCRD expect families to keep up with these expenses when salaries are not increasing at this rate?
This increase is also way above the consumer price index (CPI) in B.C. of 4.2 per cent recorded in December 2023. The 11 per cent increase in water is 2.6 times the CPI.
And we are still experiencing water shortages in the summer—even with these rate increases. I look forward to the SCRD explaining these exorbitant cost increases—and I also request the SCRD to reduce the cost increase to keep it affordable for its residents.
