Letters: Sechelt Legion welcomes all to ‘home away from home’

'Everyone is welcome all the time at the Sechelt Legion. We want the community to adopt the Legion as its home away from home. We’re family friendly. Your patronage is essential to our continued good works in the community.'

Sechelt Legion member Suzanne McLean, president Bill McLean, Mayor John Henderson, and Mike David cut the ribbon on the new home to Branch 140 of the Royal Canadian Legion on Inlet Street, July 26. Mike David volunteered hundreds of hours of his time to completing the woodwork in the new building.

With the opening of the new Sechelt Legion site, we stand on the shoulders of giants. Jack Mayne was a First World War veteran and founding member of this Legion in 1934. He, along with Larry Surtees, another First World War veteran, spearheaded building the Legion’s third home on Wharf Avenue in 1973. And I have no doubt that their spirits are with us today as we celebrate the grand opening of the Sechelt Legion’s fourth home in its 90-year history. You’ll see Jack’s portrait waiting for us inside to celebrate the continuation of his and the Sechelt Legion’s legacy.

Thank you to the major contributors of this project – all of them were crucial to our success.

The many members who volunteered their time, in some cases hundreds or even thousands of hours, over the past five years, were also essential to this project and to keeping the Branch alive long enough to see its completion.

This is the culmination of five years of hard work, along with worry and stress. I would like to acknowledge my wife Suzanne’s support throughout this difficult journey and I’d like to acknowledge Mike David’s volunteer efforts regarding the woodwork in the lounge and the making of frames, stands and shelves for displaying our treasured memorabilia. His labour of love is truly outstanding!

Everyone is welcome all the time at the Sechelt Legion. We want the community to adopt the Legion as its home away from home. We’re family friendly. Your patronage is essential to our continued good works in the community. Come in often and help us sustain operations. Doing so means our continued charitable support of many local charities. In fact, we donate more than $40,000 a year toward our community.
