Re - Sechelt supports dark sky proposal:
I would like to commend District of Sechelt councillors and Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club (SCAC) President Charles Ennis for pursuing an application to the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for our region to become certified as the second official dark-sky community in Canada.
This commitment to reduce light pollution not only has the potential to enhance our view of the cosmos but also to protect ecosystems (plants, wildlife and insects rely on darkness to forage, breed and navigate) and help energy conservation efforts. If successful, certification could also mean increased tourism.
Embracing responsible lighting allows us –– and future generations –– to marvel at the night sky which has inspired countless explorers, scientists and dreamers. A dark-sky park at SCAC Observatory would support education (SCAC members are welcoming and knowledgeable) and provide awe-inspiring experiences.
Thank you for supporting a healthy planet and star gazers by looking beyond streetlights and intrusive lighting. Let us look up at the sky.
