Letters: Recognizing Riel Day

Editor:

On Louis Riel Day, Nov. 16, as Metis authors and historians, we gave a presentation on Louis Riel to an audience of members of the BC Metis Federation (BCMF) via Zoom. Among other matters, we called for the exoneration of Riel from his conviction for High Treason in 1885 under an ancient statute of England.

The president of BCMF, Keith Henry, thanked us for the “powerful presentation.”

We have been involved in writing and speaking about Riel and Metis matters for decades. We have a combined age of 179 years, and may be the oldest husband and wife team in the history of Canada to have made a public presentation.

On Louis Riel Day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement in which he said that “Riel’s contributions to our country cannot be overstated” and referred to his visionary leadership and “unwavering commitment to Indigenous rights, justice and bilingualism.”
