Letters: Levers vs knobs, and bears

In response to Carole Harmon’s letter about the visit by the bear

Vancouver has a different building code than the rest of B.C. and fortunately, not many bears right within the Vancouver city limits. Since 2014, the Vancouver building code has mandated lever door handles.

“New Vancouver Building Code Mandates Door Lever Handles Over Knobs. In the near future there will only be one place to see a doorknob in Vancouver – inside a museum. That’s because in December of last year the city council amended the city’s building code to ban doorknobs in all commercial and residential buildings. Jan 16, 2014.”

Fortunately, areas like North Vancouver and Coquitlam where bears are often around, operate under the BC Building Code. Other cities in Canada are also adopting the lever only rule, based on levers being easier for one handed operation (or an elbow if hands are full) and for people with weakness to grasp. I’m sure no one is thinking about bears.
