Letters: Lest we forget? Oops you forgot

Editor:

I was very surprised that his name was not called out. On Nov. 11 at the Remembrance Day celebration in downtown Sechelt, the Legion produced another excellent ceremony at the cenotaph. Thank you.

But when the veterans who had passed away in the last year were called out and recognized for their service, his name was not included.

Derek Hamm died on May 25, 2024 at the age of 47. I notified Veterans Affairs a week later of his passing, and was promised a letter of condolence in the mail. It has been six months, and still nothing. No support for his family still, though we are eligible. Eight years of service and a lifetime of injury. Our two-year-old daughter, and his two sons all live in this community.

Bureaucracy...a clerical error perhaps? Surely. But I think “service” should be a two-way street when someone signs up with their life.
