Letters: Don’t pass on the right

Editor:

I have been a resident of Roberts Creek for the past 10 years and have seen a tremendous increase in traffic along Highway 101 to Gibsons and Sechelt. Our highway being single lanes in both directions can cause delays when there is construction or an accident.

I was saddened by the news of the very tragic accident that happened last week causing the death of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau who were cycling on a rural road in New Jersey and were struck by a vehicle passing on the right.

A situation I see at least once a week is when a car is waiting to turn left on to Henry Road from the 101 and needs to do so safely. There are other areas like this when turning left to Sunshine Coast golf course, Cliff Gilker Park or in Davis Bay. Drivers behind the vehicle waiting to turn left must show patience as it can take a few minutes especially if there is ferry traffic. I witness some drivers not wait and pass the waiting vehicle on the right shoulder. This is very unsafe and there may be pedestrians or bicycles walking or riding there who may not be seen by an approaching car.

It is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs.

Until we have have safer passing lanes or improvements to our highway we all need to exercise patience and caution.
