I witnessed the Oct. 27 panel discussion between Elphinstone Logging Focus (ELF) and Sunshine Coast Community Forest (SCCF) at the Roberts Creek Community Hall and am grateful to see an agreement made. The panel was comprised of intelligent, hardworking, dedicated people doing what each thinks is right, which makes it heartbreaking to see how they are being pitted against each other by greedy practices that are the real problem.
The SCCF didn’t adequately respond to ELF’s claims that clear-cutting (broadly defined) as a process and road building as a consequence is harmful to the Coast. I do see SCCF’s desire to benefit the community, while being politically between a rock and a hard place on what decisions they can make.
We are being thrown table scraps to distract us from systemic problems and to create dissonance among us on the Coast for others’ gain (as evidenced by the no show of BC Timber Sales at the panel). These organizations need support and common ground.
