In her letter to you last week Johanna van den Broeke offers many practical suggestions re saving water — some of which I remember using last time we had Stage 4 restrictions here in Gibsons, and some I had never thought of before.

I do object, however, to the idea of baby wipes for “the stinky bits” between shower days. Baby wipes are just plain bad for the environment — whether you flush them or garbage them. Surely a damp wash cloth with a bit of soap makes for a more environmentally friendly sponge bath? The minimal amount of water used for this must be preferable to sending more toxins to the landfill. As for “not rinsing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher” – why use the dishwasher at all? (I’ve never owned one myself.) A dish pan in the kitchen sink, water supplemented by what you boiled in the kettle last time (or maybe some of that excess water caught by the shower?), then a quick rinse-off would probably save more water than running the dishwasher. I understand that dishwashers are real water hogs.

Sincerely

Anne Miles, Gibsons
