Letters: $775,000 is too much to restore a sea vessel

Editor: It makes no sense that Gibsons wants to spend $775,000 to restore the Persephone and build a shelter to protect it from the weather. Working boats like the Persephone were built to be in water and to withstand storms at sea.

Working boats like the Persephone were built to be in water and to withstand storms at sea. If a restored Persephone were to sit in the open outdoors, it would be doused with rain water, which is less damaging than sea water. Land-based winds would be much less likely to damage the vessel than winds at sea.

The Persephone weathered the weather without any shelter for decades. I’d suggest using the money already raised to restore the boat and move it to an outdoor space.

Any leftover funds should go to the food bank or another worthy cause.
