Gibsons is generally a quiet town except when traffic is moving to and from the ferry. Then the noise is quite distracting for people who live on Sunshine Coast Highway – especially on North Road and Gibsons Way. Large trucks and vans are not always to blame and, for some very large trucks, the main source of noise is from the road surface.
By far the loudest and more irritating noises are caused by motor bikes and vehicles with poor exhausts and, I suspect, poorly maintained engines.
There is ample legislation in place to control noise from vehicles. The Criminal Code, Motor Vehicle Act and municipal bylaws all provide rules and penalties for those that fail to follow them. It is up to police and bylaw enforcement to deal with those who cause unnecessary noise. I urge local police to take appropriate action that might include putting notices about noise pollution at the ferry terminal and having periodic crackdowns on the worst offenders. Most could be spotted as they leave or approach the ferry dock.
