Sechelt is suffering because Mayor Henderson does not get along with either his senior staff or councillors. Less than a year ago, Mr. Henderson was also censured by the SCRD for his poor behaviour. Both revelations were the result of a professional independent investigation. In each instance, Mr. Henderson refused to apologize.
During Mr. Henderson’s previous term as mayor, a business development group known as Sechelt Innovations Ltd. was formed by the district and given considerable autonomy.
Two of its leaders resigned within months citing political involvement. Mayor Henderson denied any responsibility. Seventy percent of the board of SIL was replaced within the first year.
There is a consistent pattern to Mr. Henderson’s autocratic and undisciplined approach to governance. While others may also bear a degree of responsibility for the district’s difficulties, leadership begins at the top. It’s time for the mayor to start to perform as an effective team member or resign.
