Letter: Sue Big Oil commitment a visionary move for Gibsons

'They’re rolling in obscene profits while they pour more and more fuel on the flames engulfing our world. They defiantly increase production and emissions year after year, and continue to receive billions in public subsidies.'

Re: Gibsons commits to the Sue Big Oil campaign

Kudos to Gibsons council for this visionary move! It’s exactly what this historic moment requires. This past year has brought the issue into razor sharp relief. Here’s what I mean...

The Pathways Alliance, i.e. the big five oil companies in the Alberta tar sands, raked in record-obliterating profits in 2022 while investing .07% of one quarter’s profits in emissions reduction.

$35.6 billion in profit

$32.1 billion in share buybacks

$16.7 billion in dividends

$0.5 billion in carbon capture and storage – their (deeply flawed) net zero plan

They’re rolling in obscene profits while they pour more and more fuel on the flames engulfing our world. They defiantly increase production and emissions year after year, and continue to receive billions in public subsidies.

And they won’t even invest in their “climate plan” of carbon capture, which is an utter boondoggle, unless they receive billions more of our money.

They’re out of control, as is our climate. They have to pay their share of the damage.
