I read with interest Jef Keighley's letter (Coast Reporter, June 29) and find it incredible that the legal costs being absorbed by the taxpayer are entirely attributable to the current mayor and council.
As the new mayor and council did not take office until December 2011, I question what unsettled legal issues were inherited.
According to the previous owner of the Sechelt Golf Course, the outstanding rent issue was initiated by the 2003 council when they opted to alter the method of calculating gross rents.
As for the termination of two District staff members, we are not privy to the explicit reasons as to why they were terminated, and accordingly, one can only assume their severance payout is in accordance with their contracts.
The Target Marine contentious zoning issue commenced long before the November 2011 election.
I applaud the efforts of Mayor Henderson and council for their decision-making and their desire to bring outstanding issues to fruition. The election results proved the citizens were ready for change and that is exactly what the newly elected mayor and council are doing.
Forward vision requires action and some unfavourable decisions have to be made. It is never easy and most often change is met with opposition.
