Our Grade 6/7 classes at Roberts Creek Elementary School recently held a Haiti relief benefit, and last week we sent $9,355 off to help Haiti.
We were in the midst of planning a ski trip when our teacher, Mr. Krangle, walked into our class with a solemn look on his face. He told us that a devastating earthquake had hit Haiti, which is an extremely poor country. We all knew that we should do something, and that's how it all started. One little class discussion, and that was it, Haiti became our priority. It took only two weeks of planning from start to finish. Everybody did their part, and we organized food booths, bands, auction items and posters. Before we knew, we had all sorts of parents and people from the community helping us out.
By organizing this benefit for the community we learned what an amazing community Roberts Creek is and what people can do when everyone works as a team. It felt wonderful to do something bigger and better than I had ever done before. Doing little things for people who are a lot worse off than you adds up to one thing - hope. We all gave hope to the people of Haiti, and it felt amazing.
We would like to thank all the kids from, Kinnikinnick, Langdale, Pender Harbour, the Spider Program and the Endeavour Program who helped us with donations. Also a huge thanks to the parents who helped with food and the sound system, so many others from our community who donated stuff for our silent auction and played in the bands. All in all we raised more than $9,000 that will be matched by the federal government.
Together we can do what is thought to be the impossible.
