Governmental claims that violent crime is going down has many people, especially women, boggling in disbelief. Formsof crime such as breaking into houses and carsmay be going down (or perhaps are not being reported); however, police and the government also reportthatthecrimes of rape anddrunken driving are going up.The only conclusion onecan reach on this contradictionisthatgovernment does not consider rape and drunken driving to beviolent. Suchsophistryopens all kinds of doors. For example, should the murder rate rise, this too can besolved by the government declaring that murder is not a violent crime. The government will then be ableto proudly declare thatCanada isthesafest country in the world in which to live, well, on paper, that is.
