They're back!
A made-on-the-Sunshine-Coast fraud is back in the headlines this week. A little over a year ago, two businesses in Sechelt were scammed by people alleging to be Coun. Garry Feschuk of the Sechelt Indian Band. They got away with a considerable amount of cash, not to mention flight tickets from a local travel agency, and almost got away with a cargo van from a local car dealership.
Guess they felt the need to get back in business. This week the perpetrators have targeted municipal officials.Town of Gibsons administrator Bill Beamish was called this week, as was Sechelt Mayor Cam Reid. A staffer at the Town of Gibsons remembered last year's scam, and quickly Beamish and others put two and two together.
Mayor Reid, a former RCMP officer, probably wasn't the best person to try to fool. Luckily for both, no money changed hands this time and there was no harm done.
But that's not to say this won't happen again.
Businesses should be aware and take the necessary precautions. If you get a phone call similar to this, hang up and call the police.
That's been the problem so far - not getting the right information to the authorities. We know it might be embarrassing going public with the knowledge that you've been scammed, but police need some help in tracking these punks down.
It's time to put these guys out of business!!!
