Applaud concern for public safety

I, along with over 100 other condominium owners, live on Park Road across from Ryan Dempster Field of Dreams and the new Gibsons and Area Recreation Centre (GARC).

I attended a Town of Gibsons meeting in April where Chris Marshall, director of planning, gave a presentation on proposed lighting for the field.

Prior to the building of the GARC, we had been told that Park Road was not going to be the main access road and that Sunnycrest Mall would have a new light installed off Gibsons Way to reroute traffic flow. During the building of this access road, people became accustomed to using Park Road instead. As a result, Park Road residents are experiencing increased traffic and noise and soon a brightly lit field.

At the meeting, I stood up and made these requests: place speed bumps on our road to slow traffic and encourage local traffic only and build a sidewalk in front of the Field of Dreams. I believe this is a park bylaw: to develop a green space in front of the field with no parking allowed and encourage and enforce parking for baseball players to be in the lot of the GARC.

As I read Shannon Bond's article regarding recreation staff and their concerns over traffic in the community centre parking lot (Coast Reporter, May 22), I applauded the concern for public safety and the use of the parking lot as a thoroughfare. This reflects the concern that we residents of Park Road are experiencing.
