Police Report: Alarm thwarts break-in at Halfmoon Bay business

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for April 28 to May 5:

• Early on April 30, a suspect attempted to gain entry to a business located in the 5600 block of Mintie Road, Halfmoon Bay. The suspect, described as a stocky male wearing a checkered hoody and loose grey sweat pants, was caught on surveillance video exiting the passenger side of a vehicle, and then kicking the front door. The suspect then broke a window and reached in but was unable to unlock the door and fled in the vehicle once the alarm sounded. Police are reviewing the video footage and the file is still under investigation.

Milk Mischief

• Sometime on April 27 or 28, a suspect gained entry to an unlocked vehicle in the 5400 block of Julmar Road, Sechelt, and poured an entire four-litre jug of milk over the interior. No other damage or theft was reported. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2020-2704.

Impaired Collision

• On April 29, police attended a single-vehicle incident in the 4900 block of Laurel Avenue, Sechelt, after witnesses reported a possible impaired driver who’d high-centred his vehicle on a large rock. The driver was able to exit the vehicle on his own and police noticed he was exhibiting signs of possible intoxication from alcohol. The driver was given a roadside alcohol screening test and after two “fail” results, was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition. The vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

Theft

• On April 29, a theft of lumber was reported from a property in the 1300 block of Russell Road, Gibsons. The missing lumber is described as three or four 16-foot-long cedar.

• Between April 25 and 29, a suspect gained entry to a rear storage shed in the 5700 block of Medusa Street, Sechelt, and stole six rubber floor mats and two 10-by-20-ft. collapsible canopy tents which had “Sunshine Coast Credit Union” printed on them. On April 30, the owner of the stolen property found one of the canopies and some of the rubber mats near Ebbtide Street and Trail Avenue, Sechelt. Police attended the scene and located a male suspect. The suspect was arrested and the file is still under investigation.

• Between May 2 and 3, a suspect stole an outboard motor off a boat that had been stored at a residence in the 6100 block of Highway 101, Sechelt. The stolen motor is described as a 3.5 horsepower black Nissan. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2020-2818.

Collision

• On April 30, police attended a two-vehicle incident on Highway 101 at Jack Road, Roberts Creek, after the first vehicle attempted a U-turn and was struck by the second vehicle. The driver of the first vehicle was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries and both vehicles had to be towed due to damage. The file is still under investigation.

Suspicious Occurrence

• On May 3 at approximately 1 p.m., a driver on Dusty Road heading towards Sechelt Inlet Road, Sechelt, was startled when a large rock struck the hood of his vehicle and then came up and off the front windshield. The driver did not see who threw the rock. Police patrolled the area, which the driver described as being about 250 metres up from Sechelt Inlet Road where the “burnout” marks are, but did not find anyone. Fortunately, the driver did not sustain any injuries and the matter has been referred to ICBC. Anyone with any information about this mischief incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2020-2803.

Tip Thief

• On May 4, a suspect stole cash from a tip jar at a business in the 5500 block of Wharf Avenue, Sechelt. The suspect, described as an Indigenous female with dyed blonde hair, was caught on surveillance video. The file is still under investigation pending suspect identification.

Fraud

• On May 4, a Coast resident reported a fraud after discovering a suspect had deposited a cheque made out to an unknown person for a large amount back in February. The resident advised that the fraudulent cheque was from a booklet the resident hadn’t yet received from his bank. The resident further explained that once he’d received the chequebook with the fraudulent cheque number in it, he found that same cheque was still in the booklet and that it was blank. The file is still under investigation.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

• On May 4, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Highway 101 near the north end of Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay. The passenger was able to exit the vehicle, which was stuck on top of a large boulder about 20 feet into the bushes across from Redrooffs Road. The trapped, unimpaired driver had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department and was taken to Sechelt Hospital, then airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital, for non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger, who was treated for minor injuries at the scene by Emergency Health Services, advised that they’d been stopped at the stop sign when the vehicle suddenly accelerated and drove into the bushes across the highway. The file is still under investigation.

• On May 4, police received multiple reports of a single-vehicle incident near Conrad Road and Highway 101, Roberts Creek, after the vehicle crashed into the ditch. Before police arrived, the driver and passenger were seen being picked up by a second vehicle and dropped off in Selma Park. Police spoke with the second vehicle driver who advised he’d only been assisting the unknown pair. The driver of the first vehicle was located at his residence and was issued a violation ticket for failing to remain at the scene of an accident. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
