Covered electric tricycles to shield out bad weather have been zooming around Vancouver streets, and now District of Sechelt staff are being asked whether they’d like to take a spin.
Councillors on June 3 unanimously supported a motion by Coun. Matt McLean to survey staff about whether they would be “interested in using electric-assist bikes and trikes.”
McLean said he was approached by one of the co-founders of VeloMetro Mobility to partner on a pilot project.
“I think it’s a great idea but I haven’t talked to our staff members to see if they would be interested, so I want to get a bit more of that before we go too far down the road,” said McLean.
The Vancouver-based company offers a service called Veemo, which it describes as “an enclosed electric-assist vehicle sharing service designed to provide car functionality for urban core travel.”
The company is applying for funding through Innovate B.C. and is seeking a partner outside the Lower Mainland, McLean said.
“They want our staff to try out this new model that they’re building and provide feedback on what it’s like” to use in a “typical work environment,” he said. “This is a completely new model. It’s something that hasn’t been seen too much before.”
After the motion was passed, Mayor Darnelda Siegers asked that councillors also be given the opportunity to complete the survey.
