United solid in one-goal win

Glen Coady saw his men's team, the IGA Selects, lose their first game and first place, but his boys struck for goals as their rep teams won two games last weekend.

Glen Coady saw his men's team, the IGA Selects, lose their first game and first place, but his boys struck for goals as their rep teams won two games last weekend.

Justice Coady hit a corner kick with the outside of his foot and curved it into the net for S.C. United in their 2-1 win.

United were solid throughout the lineup as goalkeeper Sam Hilstead had a good game. Julian Cantarutti was a presence at centre midfield, and 12-year-old fullback Dolf Vermuelen was solid at the back. Nathaniel Lussier scored the winning goal.

Stashan Coady scored, and goalkeeper Colton Davies locked the door as the U12 Storm beat Kerrisdale Aeros 1-0. Griffin Troup dominated the midfield to hold the team together for their second win in a row. The U14 silver division Celtics saw opponents miss a penalty kick early and Alex Pluschke scored for Celtic to tie the score at 1-1.

Richmond was awarded a penalty kick with 10 minutes left, and that goal took the starch out of the Coast lads. Another late Richmond goal gave them a 3-1 win.

Elia Paradis played a great game at centreback and was Celtic's player of the game. Elia will wear the coveted Celtic jersey this week. The U16 Strikers faced a hot goalkeeper and just couldn't find the net. Strikers powered two dozen shots at the Tempest goal, but only one hit the mark.

Josh Lagace, who won the ball in a crowd of Tempest players, neatly headed Jeremy Izad's cross in. It was just one of those games.

Strikers won the ball and dominated play, but Tempest had the finish on this day. Jamie Ellison was Strikers' leader as he consistently won the ball and led his team forcing a Tempest player to make a hard tackle that drew a yellow card. A tough 3-1 loss to take, but one day the lads will get the breaks like Tempest did and come home with a win. The U14 Scorpions made it three league wins in a row as they finessed their way passed Coquitlam 2-0.

It was a tough game to play, as the field was rough and the opponents rougher. Scorpions kept to their good brand of football and prevailed as midfielder Taylor Metcalfe hit a left-footed shot for one and Candice Veale scored her first of the season. It appears the sprinting drills after last week's uninspired play by the forwards paid off. Scorpions play North Shore Eclypse next at Shirley Macey Park on Oct. 17, at 12:30 p.m.

The U12 Stingrays met the top team in their league. The opposition was older and had played together for some time. They showed the Stingrays what they will be like in a couple of years if they work hard. A tough lesson on the wrong end of a 6-0 score.
