The first 2005 youth rep soccer games finally took place last weekend.
The U14 girls' Scorpions continued their fine season with a strong game against the North Shore Wave.
Noah Mithrush, supported by Tayler Metcalf and Kim Doerksen, dominated the midfield, and Addy Fearnley stood out on the back line. Sarah Rayner fired a great cross into the goal area for Jenna Scott to push it over the goal line for the first tally.
Kendra Pomfret whacked a bouncing ball from the 18-yard line for the second, and our girls had a 2-0 win and a pass into the next round of cup play.
The U14 boys' gold division SC United prevailed in spite of rusty finishing.
Julian Cantarutti, Nathaniel Lussier and Connor Richey were strong in the midfield, and Kerry Patrick Hlatky's two markers stood up in a 2-1 win.
Both United and Scorpions continue to set the standard in their leagues - a fine example for our other soccer youth to emulate.
The U14 boys' silver division Celtics were the victims of the flu and a well-manned West Vancouver team.
Skyler Lagace had a busy and strong game in goal. He made one good save and an excellent pass up the wing to Liam Parry who took the ball all the way for the Celtics' only goal. Celtics played well, but their nine players couldn't handle the constantly fresh legs they were forced to face and lost 4-1. The U16 boys' Strikers had a slow start and found themselves down by two goals in the first 10 minutes against Squamish United.
Our lads came back with one from Jesse Horn's deflected corner kick and finished the half down 2-1.
Joshua Lagace hit one from just inside the penalty area. Then Jeremy Izad got the third with a shot from the left. Squamish tied the game at 3-3 shortly after.
Joel Heney and Chris Newbold stood out on defence as the undermanned Strikers hung on. Then with one minute to go, Squamish scrambled the ball in and picked up the 4-3 win.
Glen Coady's U12 boys' Storm played a strong Richmond team and showed they are on their way to parity, as they territorially held their own.
The experienced Richmond crew had the finishing edge and offset Alex Heney's goal with two for a 2-1 final score.
The U12 girls' Stingrays showed signs of the layoff, as they were not sharp in their own penalty area.
The Stingrays held their own on the outfield, but were weak in front of their goalkeeper. The 6-0 score did not show the locals' true effort. These girls have a great attitude and are showing real improvement.
There is a soccer camp slated for Pro-D Day on Feb. 11.
Players aged nine to 12 go from 9 a.m. to noon and aged five to eight from 1 to 3 p.m. Call 604-885-2897 for more information.
