Sunshine Coast soccer families headed east for Easter as four teams were entered into the Kelowna Ice Breaker Tourney. The U14 Storm Girls were excited after winning gold in Surrey’s Mayor Cup in March. The tournament started off rough for the girls with a 3-1 loss against Vernon United.
As the weekend progressed, winning two other matches, the U14 Storm met Vernon United again in a nail-biting final. The girls started off strong with a gritty goal by Brynn Storey, supported by Isla Mackay, and Maegan Speirs immediately followed by a brilliant cross from Chelsey Seabrook to sharp shooter Scarlett Stinson for a second goal. Fans were elated. Vernon came back strong and scored two aggressive goals in response. The second half was a collection of excellent defence by the rest of Storm’s formidable lineup, keeping the score tied at the whistle. Penalty shootout commenced with an amazing 12-shooter line up.
It was even until Seabrook saved a rocket shot to the center top, and finally, sweeper extraordinaire Callie Baptiste sent the game winning shot into the corner. Parents lost their voices as the girls emerged victorious with a second gold to end the season. Callie Baptiste won the MVP for the entire tournament U14 Girls division.
Some die-hard soccer families stayed to cheer our U16 and U14 boys in their finals both winning gold for Sunshine Coast. Excellent finish of the 2021-2022 for the rep soccer community. Rep tryouts are on April 30. Register now!
