The youth charged with arson following the massive June, 2010 fire in Lower Gibsons is now heading back before the courts - once police arrest him again.

On Friday, Jan. 14, Crown counsel Trevor Cockfield said the youth was eligible for extra-judicial measures, meaning there will be no criminal trial, but indicated that if the youth failed to comply with any of the conditions of extra-judicial measures, the case would be referred back to youth court and a criminal prosecution would continue.

Cockfield confirmed with Coast Reporter on Friday afternoon, Jan. 28, that the youth did in fact fail to comply with the conditions of extra-judicial measures and Crown will now be moving forward and prosecuting the case.

The youth was slated to appear in Sechelt Provincial Court on Tues-day, Feb. 1, where a date was to be fixed for his trial, but Cockfield said the youth did not show up in court, so a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

The fire the youth allegedly set while skipping school destroyed Coles Marine Diesel and the Wynken Blynken Nod Backpackers B&B, two heritage buildings on the Gibsons waterfront.
