What's it like to be Mayor of Sechelt? Ask these students

Grade 7 students get a glimpse of governance as Sechelt's co-mayors

Two lucky students got a first-hand glimpse of what it's like sitting in the big seat for a day.

Camryn Bramham and Layan Rakha, both in Grade 7, were Sechelt’s co-mayors for the day on Friday, Feb. 9.

When asked what their favourite part of being mayor was, Layan said that she enjoyed seeing the inner workings of the district, hearing people discuss ideas and solutions to issues.

Camryn said she liked having an inside view of different peoples' jobs and how they contribute– but her favourite part was having everyone call her mayor.

During their tour of the district office, the two co-mayors got to see the different roles that staff fulfill.

Layan said she enjoyed learning from staff who use the property assessment tool to evaluate homes.

Earlier in their day in office, the two co-mayors had a tour of Sechelt’s Water Resource Centre with Sechelt Mayor, John Henderson.

“It was fun,” said Layan. “We saw the science behind cleaning water and how the water can be used with plant growing.”

Layan said her day as co-mayor would make her consider joining council when she's older; she enjoys making decisions, sharing ideas and leading.

Camryn also enjoys having decision-making power but said she would like a job that allows her to be creative.

The co-mayors also got to put some legislation into place, signing proclamations to announce the recognition of important days for the district.

“Whereas Purple Day is celebrated on March 26 annually during Epilepsy Awareness Month to increase knowledge and understanding of epilepsy in the community,” said Layan. “Therefore, I proclaim March 26, 2024 as Purple Day in the District of Sechelt.”

“Whereas Thursday, June 8 2024 marks its 32nd annual World Ocean Day, celebrating the role of the ocean in our everyday life and inspiring action to protect it,” said Camryn. “Therefore, I proclaim June 8, 2024 as World Oceans Day in the District of Sechelt.”

Mayor Henderson said he had a great time with the co-mayors, adding that much of the district's work is done for the benefit of future generations, and saying it was a treat to hear all the ideas the co-mayors had.
