Weekly protest continues in Davis Bay

People calling for an end to vaccine mandates gathered on Feb. 12

A weekly protest against vaccine mandates continues to gather every Saturday in Davis Bay.

On Feb. 12, Coast Reporter staff counted more than 100 participants flanking both sides of the highway by 12:30 p.m., as well as around a dozen passing vehicles that also bore signs and Canadian flags. This number of protesters is an estimate, and may have changed after Coast Reporter left the scene.

Protesters in Davis Bay waved signs and flags, some calling for an end to vaccine mandates, criticizing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and others thanking truckers.

The same day marked more than two weeks since the self-proclaimed "Freedom Convoy" of protesters began demonstrations in the country’s capital, ostensibly to protest federal vaccination mandates for truckers. They demanded an end to all COVID-19 restrictions and some members of the group also called for the government to be dissolved. On Feb. 13, the mayor of Ottawa announced a deal had been made with those protesters to leave the downtown core within 24 hours.

During the Davis Bay protest, one man stood farther down the highway in Davis Bay, closer to the Living Faith Lutheran Church, holding a sign in counter-protest.
