This first day of October, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) declared an immediate end to water user conservation regulations on its Chapman, Egmont, Cove Cay, North and South Pender Harbour, Langdale, Soames Point, Granthams Landing and Eastbourne water systems.

“We are thankful that we made it through this summer without the need to implement Stages 3 or 4 in the Chapman Water System, first time in nine years,” general manager of infrastructure services, Remko Rosenboom stated in an Oct. 1 press release.

“Repairing leaks combined with the Church Road Well Field water source have played a significant role in maintaining water supply in the Chapman Water system this year," said Rosenboom.

A chart on scrd.ca displays the history of water conservation levels between 2012 and 2023 for the Chapman system, which serves the largest number of the region's water clients. Oct. 1 was also the end date for restrictions on that system between 2013 and 2015, in 2018, 2019 and 2021. The latest date that restrictions were removed was Dec. 14, which happened in 2022. Last year, that system's restrictions ended Oct. 4.

Board chair Leonard Lee’s statement in the release began with a commendation for SCRD staff “for their dedication in identifying and communicating with property owners about large leaks on private properties.”

“I also want to thank property owners for conserving water and for promptly addressing their leaks, including those that have been identified as part of the ongoing water meter installation project in Sechelt," said Lee.

Information on water conservation regulations can be found at www.scrd.ca/water-regulations. A popular feature, the Chapman Lake water storage level graphic has been offline since Sept. 25.  The website states "The lake level measurement gauges are temporarily offline due to planned maintenance. We will update them as soon as possible."
