Towards a sustainable future

Empower the Coast is a new action-oriented group of people with ideas and projects to make the Coast more sustainable by providing energy efficient lighting, solar and wind power to all interested public buildings.

The first project was to give compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) to public gathering spaces, primarily community halls and other public meeting places. Currently, the group is working towards setting up one of the halls with solar and other alternative technologies and then spreading to other public buildings on the Coast. The District of Sechelt is considering a proposal to make the Seaside Centre an initial demonstration building.

Empower the Coast is aiming to have public gathering spaces that are models of energy efficient "off-grid" sustainability - places to go to keep warm when the power goes out.

The project began after people who took Bret Treadwell's Mind Over Matrix course, designed to create deeper awareness, decided to walk the talk by forming an ongoing action group when Treadwell made a contribution of CFL bulbs for distribution on the Coast.

All are invited to participate in the group, especially those with interest or expertise in alternative technologies. The group meets once a month and is all about doing green projects and having fun. Besides promoting and helping to implement alternative energy saving technologies, future projects are to organize educational events, including a green tour, to give people practical ideas of how to green up their homes. A website is under construction as well. For more information, contact Tella Sametz at 604-885-1091, email [email protected] or Michael Siddall at 604-740-8369, email [email protected].
