Teens give back to their schools

Earlier this year, two groups of teens volunteered to be in-school buddies (mentors) to children in their feeder elementary schools.

Earlier this year, two groups of teens volunteered to be in-school buddies (mentors) to children in their feeder elementary schools.

One group of teen buddies is from Chatelech Secondary School and is matched with children from Sechelt Elementary School. The other is from Elphinstone Secondary School and is matched with children from Gibsons Elementary School.

The program is fun-based, one-on-one and requires one hour per week in school hours and on school property. The idea is to build self-esteem and self-confidence in young children.

From all reports, it has been a great success. The teen buddies in grades 10 to 12 are making friendships with more than 17 little buddies from grades 2 to 7.

The teen volunteers follow the same screening process as adult mentors in the programs. They attend an information session, complete an application, provide references and are interviewed and trained.

Last September, due to the efforts of a Sunshine Coast committee, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver agreed to open a branch office on the Sunshine Coast.

In partnership with School District No. 46, Big Brothers and Big Sisters on the Sunshine Coast has introduced the in-school mentoring program to the high school communities of Sechelt and Gibsons as a one-year pilot project.

It is hoped that next year Big Brothers and Big Sisters will be able to expand the number of volunteers, schools and children served.
