One of the incidents reported by the Sunshine Coast RCMP this week, was of a man seen walking with what appeared to be a rifle, but turned out to be a pellet gun. Apparently, carrying either one of those in public is not a good idea here on the Coast — or anywhere -- in 2024.

Firearms report

On Nov. 5, at approximately 3:30 pm, the RCMP received multiple reports of a male walking in the 900 block of Keith Road in Gibsons carrying a rifle. Police located the 50-year-old suspect and arrested him for careless use of a firearm. The gun was located and found to be a pellet gun that looked very similar to a hunting rifle.

Elon Musk scam

A Sunshine Coast resident fell victim to an investment scam, which started out with an initial $250 deposit, but ended with them losing more than $900,000. The scam utilizes fake endorsements from Elon Musk and shows high return for low risk. These types of scams, common across Canada, have led to large financial losses from the victims who believe they are working with legitimate security and investment companies.

Bike Theft

On Oct. 21, a report was received from Gibsons Elementary School that nine bikes had been stolen from a shed over the weekend at 783 School Rd. in Gibsons. RCMP believe that a white Ford pick up, also stolen from Gibsons, had been used to transport the bikes. The truck and the bikes have been recovered by police, some in Sechelt and some in Gibsons. Anyone with any information regarding this theft is asked to contact the Sunshine Coast RCMP at 604-885-2266.

Single vehicle collision

On Oct. 15, police were dispatched to a report of a Mercedes vehicle, which went off the road in the 7800 block of Sunshine Coast Highway and rolled into a ditch on the west side of the road. An 88-year-old Sunshine Coast resident was extracted from the vehicle and airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital in stable condition. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
