The Aug. 8 wildfire past Port Mellon and Dogpatch is a good reminder as to why Sechelt Fire Department Chief Dwight Davison has kept the campfire/burn ban in place, despite the rain we enjoyed last week.
It’s going to be a beautiful weekend with temperatures expected to reach 26-C today (Aug. 9), 24-C Saturday and 21-C Sunday, when the clouds start creeping in. According to Weatherhood, Sechelt should be experiencing rain by Monday with temperatures expected to drop to 18.
Temperatures will remain in the high teens all week, with mostly cloudy skies and some rain right up until next Thursday.
Meanwhile, Environment Canada’s forecast calls for more sun starting next Wednesday.
The burn ban includes all fires, for warmth or cooking, and all beach fires, burning barrels, fireworks, firecrackers and sky lanterns.
The campfire prohibition does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or portable campfire devices, which use briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, provided they are Canadian Standards Association or Underwriters Laboratories of Canada approved, and the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres. A resource from the provincial government explaining the different categories of open burning is available online.
