Students from Roberts Creek Elementary School were getting practical use of their French skills this week as they hosted 28 students from Quebec in the Creek.
The visit was the second part of an exchange that previously saw Grade 7 students from Roberts Creek travel to Quebec for 10 days.
"One of the biggest assets of this exchange is that it exposes the kids to a lot of French in a fun atmosphere so they end up with a more positive attitude toward it and want to use it more," said teacher Barry Krangle.
Krangle said that while his students were in Quebec in February they toured Montreal, went to Carnivale, went skating outside in Ottawa and sat in the legislature the day an ugly debate broke out.
"It was interesting for the students to see that and then say how appalled they were at the actions of the politicians," said Krangle.
While the students from Quebec are visiting the Coast, Krangle says they will be going on hikes, having family beach fires, travelling to Skookumchuck Narrows, touring the harbours in Vancouver, riding tandem bikes, spending a day at Whistler and going on a First Nations environmental workshop.
"Our focus for the students is primarily environmentally-orientated," said Krangle.
He noted this cultural and language exchange has helped the students make friends across the country and has broadened their view of the world.
