The provincial government together with the B.C. School Trustees Association and numerous film industry partners is introducing a new student film project and festival called Reel Vue.

Reel Vue 2008 will incorporate submissions of student art, music and writing on the theme of history and the concepts of choice, home, humanity, space and time, in recognition of BC150 Years. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 22. Film experts will review the submissions, select some of the best and, based on the potential for a single and strong narrative, group the students into five teams of three. These students will be named in March.

Selected students will gather for a week in early April at the Gulf Island Film and Television School. There, teams will collaborate with the assistance of an industry professional assigned to guide them through the process of reworking their art into a larger narrative, telling their stories through film.

Students interested in submitting art work to Reel Vue 2008 should consider the following criteria and guidelines:Eligibility is limited to grades 10 to 12 students in B.C. public, independent and band schools. Submissions must be in one of three mediums: the musical, such as an instrumental or vocal song; the visual, such as a photo essay, sketch or painting; or the written, such as a short story or poem.

Submissions need to address the theme of history in one of five categories: choice, which could include stories about specific decisions that have shaped the history of the province; home, which could include the stories of families and their experience in B.C.; humanity, which could include stories about special individuals and families; space, which could include stories about unique communities and landscapes; and time, which could include stories about pivotal moments in B.C.'s history.

Submissions must be accompanied by a brief description of the work and how it connects the theme of B.C. history with the concept of choice, home, humanity, space or time.

Submissions must be accompanied by a consent form signed by a parent and school administrator.
