Sunshine Coast RCMP and search and rescue crews had a happy ending to a search Tuesday morning.

According to Cpl. Lisa Fossum, police received a call just after 7 p.m. Monday night that a 15-year-old girl from Elphinstone Secondary School did not arrive home from school.

Fossum said search crews along with police and a dog unit searched an area surrounding the back of the school and Sunnycrest Mall.

The search continued for several hours, but was abandoned after light became an issue, Fossum said.

The search resumed Tuesday morning, but was called off around 11 a.m. when the student arrived back at school.Fossum said she could not comment as to why the student didn't go home Monday night.

In a press release Tuesday afternoon, School District No. 46 officials praised the efforts of the search crews.

"We are very fortunate in this community to have dedicated emergency organizations like search and rescue, fire departments and the RCMP," said school superintendent Stewart Hercus.

"The board and School District No. 46 staff would like to thank those individuals who worked all last night and today. We are all glad there is a happy resolution to this incident."
