Shíshálh Nation members will be heading into the Feb. 15 election for chief already knowing who will sit on council, after a withdrawal from the race led to the four remaining candidates being acclaimed.
Corey August, Alvina Paul and Selina August, who were first elected in 2017, will all be returning for another term as councillors, along with Barbara Joe.
The withdrawal of Jessie August from the race means Joe will take the seat held by Keith Julius, who decided not to run again.
In a candidate profile prepared for the shíshálh Nation’s election web page, Joe, who served as the nation’s chief administrative officer from 2006 to 2014, said: “I feel that it is time for women of the shíshálh Nation to step forward and bring about a more inclusive style of leadership. We need leadership that listens to the membership and staff, and makes decisions based on facts and fair policy.”
The acclaimed councillors will take office after the Feb. 15 election that will decide who will become chief.
Incumbent Warren Paull is running for another term. The other candidates for chief are Randy Joe, Lenora Joe and Nievelina Carmona.
The advance poll is scheduled for Feb. 9.
