A Sunshine Coast man has had two charges of sexual assault against him dropped in Vancouver Supreme Court.
Donald Hensler, 82, was charged with two counts of sexual assault related to two alleged incidents at a local support group meeting between 2008 and 2009, but Regional Crown Counsel stayed the charges recently after Hensler's preliminary hearing when it appeared there was no likelihood of a conviction.
"Our charge approval standard was not met. It's a continuing charge approval standard that starts before charges are laid and continues all through the trial, and we're constantly assessing whether there was a substantial likelihood of conviction," said Sandra Cunningham, regional Crown counsel.
"It looks like [the Crown] carefully considered the case and determined that our charge approval standard had not been met."
