Sept. 27 shop fire in Halfmoon Bay, not considered suspicious

Due to a lack of fire hydrants, water had to be shuttled to a fire in Halfmoon Bay last Friday.

A Sept. 27 structure fire in Halfmoon Bay is not considered suspicious, says Ryan Daley, Fire Chief at Halfmoon Bay Fire Department.

The department received a call about the fire, which involved a 40-by-60-foot shop at the back of a property on the Sunshine Coast Highway in Halfmoon Bay, at 9:31 a.m. last Friday.

Daley says 14 Halfmoon Bay fire fighters and two mutual aid trucks from Sechelt attended the fire, including an engine with a crew of five and a tender with a crew of two, to assist with shuttling water, since there are no fire hydrants near this location. The fire took six hours to control and overhaul, before crews were released from the scene.

A water bladder was placed at the location to be used as a water source and a tender from Halfmoon Bay -- with assistance of the tender from Sechelt -- shuttled water from the nearest hydrant on Redrooffs Road to the fire location.

“Halfmoon Bay Fire would like to give a huge thanks to the Sechelt Fire Department for their assistance and quick response to our district on that Friday morning, when many of our firefighters were out of the district working at their regular employment,” says Daley.

Many firefighters with the Halfmoon Bay Fire Department are volunteers.
