This year's celebration of conservation, hosted by the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association (SCCA), promises to be every bit as good as last year's fabulous Stickleback Social. For 2004, the SCCA is calling their annual evening fund-raising event the Ocean Commotion. The theme of the day-long celebration will be marine protection. It will be held at the Seaside Centre, 5790 Teredo Street, Sechelt on Saturday, Nov. 27. Doors open at noon.
The afternoon workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. is free and will focus on the importance of marine protected areas. Featured will be slide presentations and talks by Sabine Jessen, B.C. conservation director of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS); sustainability specialist Kurt Grimm, associate professor in earth and ocean sciences at the University of British Columbia; Nikki Wright, executive director of the SeaChange Marine Conservation Society; representatives from the local diving community; and other speakers. Everyone is welcome.
In the evening, from 6 p.m. to midnight, the community is invited to the Ocean Commotion with a terrific silent auction (available for viewing all day), finger foods, no host bar, conservation awards, live music (bands to be announced soon) and wonderful underwater, multi-projector slide presentations by Tom Sheldon.
Tickets for the Ocean Commotion are $10 and can be purchased at Talewind Books in Sechelt, the Roberts Creek General Store and Coast Books in Gibsons. They are also available from any SCCA director, from the contacts listed below and, on Nov. 27 only (noon to 6 p.m.), at the Seaside Centre.
