The Sechelt Airport is likely getting a new batch of fees for tie-downs and parking, as council moves forward on the recommendations.

At the May 17 council meeting, Beverley Smith, the manager of financial services, presented the suggested new fees. The new tie-down fee is proposed at $8 for overnight, $40 for monthly and $450 for annual. This is an increase from the previous annual tie-down fee of $300.

District staff identified the earlier fee as lower than other airports of a similar size in B.C. A schedule shows these fees would increase in 2024 and again in 2025, with annual tie-down fees ultimately reaching $550 over the three-year period.

Parking lot fees will be introduced for overnight stays and longer durations, while day parking will remain free. Overnight parking will be $5, while a monthly permit will be $10 and an annual vehicle parking permit will be $100 (or at a $50 prorated fee after June 30).

The report in the agenda states tie-downs are an essential safety measure, while parking revenue can be used to offset costs and fund improvements or additional services. Staff compared fees of airports in Squamish, Qualicum and Powell River, where fees ranged from $560 to $880.

When Coun. Alton Toth asked about payment, Smith said the airport will be implementing QR codes, cash or users can provide their credit card details to the Sechelt office.

Council gave the user fees bylaw three readings.
