The District of Sechelt is one of three local governments sharing in more than $1 million in Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants announced by the province June 24.
Sechelt will get $479,551 for a Wharf Avenue sidewalk improvements project to “enhance the main entrance to the District of Sechelt and improve access to commercial enterprises while reducing vehicle and pedestrian conflicts.”
The Wharf Avenue project, which has been on the district’s list of potential road upgrades since the mid-90s, will focus on the intersection with Dolphin Street and calls for a two-metre-wide protected sidewalk from Dolphin to Cowrie, barrier curb and gutter, street lights, planters, and other beautification.
It also proposes a direct entry from Dolphin into the parking lot of the commercial building at 5561 Wharf Ave., which is currently fully open to the road.
Director of engineering Sanath Bandara said at the time that the total project cost is estimated at $685,074.
Council voted Feb. 19 to use either gas tax funds or other grant opportunities to cover its 30 per cent share, or $205,523.
