In response to rising concerns over community safety, District of Sechelt will be holding a community meeting.

During council’s Aug 7 regular meeting, Coun. Brenda Rowe, who is also chair of the Community Safety Select Committee, introduced the topic, saying she has been meeting with community members who are “very concerned” about safety and want to have a community meeting.

She said Mayor John Henderson and herself met with local RCMP who are keen to be a part of the meeting, however, due to RCMP schedule restraints, the meeting dates are limited to the third week of August (19 to 23).

Henderson said it's important for council to “get on this” and hear from the community.

“I think there's some misinformation of what is or isn't being done, so a chance just for everybody to chat,” he said.

At Rowe's request, staff confirmed the community safety budget has enough funds to book a venue and facilitator for the meeting.

Staff confirmed the seniors centre is the preferred location and will work on securing a date in the week that works for the RCMP.

Council unanimously approved the motion to direct staff to assist in organizing the meeting.

Updates for the meeting details will be provided as they are announced by the district.
