The Sears brand is about to disappear from the Sunshine Coast, and the rest of Canada.
Sears Canada, which has been under bankruptcy protection since the summer, announced this week that “following exhaustive efforts, no viable transaction for the company to continue as a going concern was received,” and it would seek court approval to liquidate the business and close all its remaining stores.
The company has confirmed that the Sears Hometown branded stores, such as the one in Gibsons, are included in the liquidation plan, although they’re independently owned franchises. The owners of the Gibsons location could not be reached for comment on their future plans.
The Ontario Superior Court was due to hear the company’s motion to liquidate all its remaining stores and assets on Oct. 13. If the court agrees, liquidation could begin as early as Oct. 19.
“The company deeply regrets this pending outcome and the resulting loss of jobs and store closures,” said a release issued on Tuesday.
The Sears outlet in Sechelt ended its relationship with the company earlier this year and the owners relaunched the store as an independent mattress and appliance shop.
