Gibsons Sea Cadets have had a busy winter with several special events in addition to their regular Wednesday meetings.

On Feb. 7, a ceremony was held to promote new entry cadets to ordinary cadets. Parents and guests were on hand to celebrate with ordinary cadets Harding, Vohanka and Bethune in this first promotion ceremony of the recently reformed Conway Division of Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corp Lonsdale. Cadets were inspected by Capt. David Hood, first vice president of the B.C. Mainland Division. Instruction in flag customs and traditions was provided by Ron Joyce, a former sea cadet with RCSCC Captain Vancouver. A sports weekend was held in Burnaby on Feb. 10 for all sea cadet corps. Conway Division formed a team with cadets from Lonsdale. They won the competition and had a fun-filled time playing with the other cadets.

A sail weekend was the next event organized to give the cadets training in the basics of handling a small sailboat. Cadets travelled to Annacis Island where they had two days of instruction and practical experience in the rigging and sailing of boats. A highlight was an intentional dunking by all in order to learn to right their boats. This weekend was followed by another two-day training on April 8, resulting in two cadets attaining their white sail level two qualification.

The cadets will leave for Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt on May 7 to receive training in helmsmanship and standing watches on small naval patrol craft.
