As the new school year kicks into gear, School District 46 (SD46) took a moment to welcome its new student trustee, Alexis Proust during its Sept. 13 regular meeting.

Officially sworn in during SD46’s Sept. 11 regular board meeting, Proust is the twelfth student trustee in the district.

The SD46 release reiterates the importance of the student trustee whose duties include, “providing insight and perspective on issues that directly impact students across the district.”

Regulations for student trustees state they, “shall have the same opportunities for participation in meetings of the Board and its committees as an elected trustee.”

However, as they are not members of the elected board, student trustees cannot attend closed meetings and cannot vote on matters before the board.

Working with the student trustee is the District Student Leadership Team (DSLT). This group of Grade 10 to 12 students from all of the district’s secondary schools “provide a platform for student voices to be heard and helps bridge the gap between schools across the region,” the release said.

DSLT is also responsible for electing its own Grade 12 members as student trustee.

Regulations state a grade 10 student from each school will join the DSLT in the winter of each school year and will continue to participate in meetings from January to June in their Grades 11 and 12 school years.
