Don’t be alarmed when on March 7, the SCRD conducts its first live test of its new mass communication system used for emergencies.
Approximately 1,600 people have signed up for the Voyent Alert system since it was launched last year.
At 10 a.m., those subscribed to the service will receive a message that says: “This is a TEST of the Sunshine Coast Regional District Emergency Alert System. This is ONLY a TEST. If this had been an actual emergency or threat, you would now see or hear instructions with information to help keep you safe. For further information go to scrd.ca/alert-system. This is ONLY a TEST, no action is required.”
Residents can sign up for alerts by text, voice call or email. Information provided can include maps, images, messages and web links.
“Regular testing of this system will allow us to ensure the system is working as expected and gives further preparedness for emergency situations,” Matt Treit, manager of protective services, said in a press release. “We strongly encourage the community to include signing up for the alert system in your personal emergency plan.”
