Falling trees caused widespread damage a windstorm Monday, Nov. 4.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) has deactivated the emergency operations centre that was initiated in response to Monday's windstorm.

In a notice sent out just before 4 p.m., the district said response has transitioned from emergency action to recovery, so the centre is no longer required.

"The SCRD would like to remind residents that during an emergency, residents could be on their own for an extended period. That is why it’s critical that individuals, families, and neighbourhoods prepare in advance for emergency events by building an emergency kit and a grab and go bag," said the update. It also reminded people to immediately report and stay away from downed power lines.

Power outages

Dozens of power outages remained on the Sunshine Coast as of 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, including most of Halfmoon Bay.

In a regional update just after 5 p.m., BC Hydro said restoration is continuing but "due to extensive damage and access challenges, customers on Gambier Island, Keats Island, and those north of Sechelt in the Sandy Hook and Sakinaw Woods area will be without power overnight tonight."

Other customers, including those in the Port Mellon area, are expected to have power restored later tonight, said the update.
