Scam warning for business owners

Businesses are warned to be very clear who they are advertising with after a business in Sechelt signed a contract via the Internet with www.yellowpage_britishcolumbia.com. The business thought they were dealing with the Canadian-based Yellow Pages Group, but this turned out not to be the case. The complainant was advised this matter will have to be pursued civilly. Businesses are reminded that the Better Business Bureau is an excellent resource to research companies and find out what the latest scams are.

Reports from a wide range of addresses in Gibsons, from Sunset Place to Harry Road, came in from over the weekend, regarding mischief to property, vehicles and thefts from unlocked vehicles. Several addresses had windows or vehicle windshields smashed with a rock or in one case, a jar of jam; one homeowner had a variety of garden furniture and planters damaged, another had some change stolen from an unlocked vehicle, and a couple had their vehicles vandalized with keys or markers.

A witness called in a possible impaired driver after the vehicle was seen weaving in its lane in Wilson Creek. A licence plate and description was provided, but police were unable to locate the suspect. Several hours later, a second officer witnessed the same vehicle weaving back and forth as it headed southbound on Highway 101 near Crow Road. The officer stopped the vehicle in Roberts Creek and determined the driver to be impaired. She was given a 24-hour driving suspension, a violation ticket for not having her driver's licence and the vehicle was towed.

A bike theft that occurred between April 26 and 27 was reported this week. The Eaton vintage style cruiser bicycle was stolen from the front yard of a residence in the 1100 block of Largo Road. The green bike has a white dove painted on it, red derailer, cork handle grips and a white seat. Anyone with any information is asked to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266, reference file 10-3078.

A witness called in a possible impaired driver after a male left a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way in a vehicle. A description, licence plate and direction of travel were provided and a police officer was able to locate the vehicle. The driver showed signs of impairment and admitted to consuming a couple of drinks after working a night shift. He was issued a 24-hour driving suspension and his vehicle was towed.

On May 6, near Hopkins Road and Marine Drive, several westbound vehicles disobeyed the stop sign and flashing lights of an eastbound school bus that was stopped to pick up school children. A witness was able to obtain the licence plate of one of the vehicles and the police will be following up with the registered owner. Drivers are reminded that failing to stop for a school bus is a ticketable offence.

Sometime between April 6 and May 6, a thief stole a welded aluminum tool box from behind a shed at a residence in the 5700 block of Tuwanek Place. The toolbox is similar to the kind put in the backs of pick up trucks.

A report of a possible impaired driver came from a business in the 5600 bloc of Highway 101. A police officer located the vehicle parked a short distance away, and spoke to the driver, who was witnessed holding a can of beer. The driver admitted to consuming half the can; as his driver's licence had conditions not to consume alcohol, the driver was issued a 12-hour driving prohibition and a sober passenger was allowed to drive the vehicle home.

Employees of a business in the 1100 block of Highway 101 reported a shoplifter who had left the premises with a number of stolen items. The shoplifter appeared intoxicated and was not very cooperative. The stolen items were retrieved and police located the suspect outside the business a short while later. The suspect was arrested and transported to cells.
