Robert Joe elected to SIB council

Byelection
SIB
Robert Joe.

Robert Joe is the new Sechelt Indian Band councillor after winning a byelection on June 25.

Joe came out on top with 111 votes, ahead of Warren Paull who secured the second highest number of votes – 67.

Dionne Paul garnered 31 votes, Benedict Pierre IV got six votes and Amanda Dixon got four votes.

A total of four ballots were declared spoiled.

The byelection was held to find a new councillor to take over the seat left vacant by Ben Pierre Jr. earlier this year.

Joe will join councillors Chris August, Randy Joe and Garry Feschuk (who is currently recovering from a stroke in hospital but maintains his position) to lead the Band with Chief Calvin Craigan until the current term ends on March 31, 2017.

Joe previously served on council for two terms, from 1993 to 1996 and 2008 to 2011.

He counted himself among dissidents who were vocally opposed to how the chief was allegedly conducting business, which led to a lockout of the administration buildings from May 3 to May 10.

Joe did not return requests for comment this week.
