A temporary fix on the road into Katherine Lake park means the popular Area A campground and beach day use area will open likely in the coming weeks. An exact re-opening date is yet to be announced.

A member of the public advised Coast Reporter mid-day on May 16 that a long-time local contractor visited the site with representatives of the park owners, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD). During that visit, local government authorities discovered repairs could be made to the road to make it safely passable for private vehicles and allow the park to be used.

“SCRD staff worked with a local contractor who generously assisted with the temporary repair, overseen by a biologist," an SCRD press release issued in the late afternoon of that day stated.

The road and the park has been closed since February when holes, created by issues with drainage damaged the road’s driving surface. A previous SCRD release stated the park would be closed until July, due to delays being experienced with obtaining permits to do complete repairs in the area.

In the most recent release, community services manager, Shelley Gagnon, explained “we understand that everyone is keen to get back into the park, particularly with the long weekend ahead, but our staff and park operator need a few more days to get everything in place for reopening.”

Facilities at the site include a picnic area, sandy swimming beach, washrooms with showers and a playground. Fishing is allowed on the lake but motorized boats are not.  To book for any of the 19 recreational vehicle sites or 10 tenting camping spots, contact the facility operator.
